Most New Yorkers don't even know it exists. But a million forgotten souls are buried in mass graves dug by convicts on a tiny, forbidden island east of the Bronx.

Since 1869, still-born babies, the homeless, the poor and the unclaimed have been stacked one upon the other, three coffins deep, on Hart Island.

Corpses are interned in great, anonymous trenches. There are no tombstones. Small white posts in the ground mark each 150 adult bodies. A thousand children and infants are buried together per grave.

It is one of the largest cemeteries in the United States. And the least visited.

The men doing the digging are convicts from Rikers Island, petty offenders tasked with carrying bodies to their final resting place.

Nearly 1,500 fresh corpses arrive each year, says visual artist Melinda Hunt, who heads the Hart Island Project, which campaigns to make the cemetery visible and accessible.

The authorities say nearly a million people have been buried here since 1869.

It is forbidden to film and photograph the uninhabited, windswept island. Visits must be authorized by the Department of Corrections, which runs the island.


First used as a cemetery in the Civil War, Hart Island has variously served as a training camp, a prison for captured Confederates, a workhouse, a mental asylum and even a Cold War missile base.

The only jetty is closed to the public, hemmed in by railings, barbed wire and spikes. Notice boards warn people to keep out.

- Records long inaccessible -

For years, records of who's been buried where have been patchy and negotiating access has proved challenging.

Some have been lost, others burnt. Families sometimes cannot even find out if their loved ones were buried by the city.

"You have a right to know where a person is. It's very important not to disappear people. It's not an acceptable thing to do in any culture," Hunt said.

The Department of Corrections says it doesn't have the infrastructure to welcome visitors on an island where the buildings are dilapidated and abandoned.

Under pressure, however, the authorities have allowed a few visits since 2007, albeit within a gazebo far from the graves.

"You don't see anything," said Elaine Joseph, a 59-year-old nurse whose baby daughter died at five days old in 1978.

"They check your ID, and ask you to hand over your cell phone, any electronic equipment and they put it in an envelope and lock it and then you get to the island, they ask for your ID again.

"They treat you as a visitor of an inmate," she said.

In November, a small group of women who threatened to bring a complaint were given permission to visit specific grave sites.

Joseph became the first to go on March 14.

Once there, she broke down in tears.

"I can't say I found closure. When you lose a child, there really is never closure. There is a piece of you that is gone," she said.

"I did find solace in that there was water surrounding it and there was a lovely view."

She was even allowed to take a photograph.

Laurie Grant, a 61-year-old doctor who gave birth to a still-born daughter in 1993, hopes to be the next.

But on March 28, she waited in vain in the rain on the jetty.

Due to unwillingness or miscommunication, those who were supposed to ferry her across the water left before she even arrived.

Over the years, Hunt said she has lost track of all the families she has tried to help, though estimates the number is at least 500.

Most were Americans, but there have been others from France, the Netherlands and Poland, and one Irish woman looking for a grandfather.

The Hart Island Project has so far managed to list more than 60,000 burials in the database.

A bill has been introduced to the city council seeking to transfer the island to the parks administration, but has not been taken up yet.

Joseph dreams of being able to return as often as she wants to what she calls "a public cemetery that the public is not allowed to visit."

She also dreams of flowers and a bench to honor her baby. "If I can put a marker on a bench, I'll be happy," she said.

Synopsis
Hart Island is America's largest cemetery where three quarters of a million people have been buried in mass graves on 101 acres of an island in the Bronx. Four families struggle to sort out how their relative ended up on Hart Island. They confront social stigma, outdated policies, police oversights and  complacency. They defy the assumption that no one cares about people buried in the potter's field.

At the end of a long journey through a labyrinth of city agencies: the NYPD, the Office of the Medical Examiner, and the NYC Department of Correction they locate a truth about how easily people become lost.  They struggle to perform the most basic grieving rituals: visiting a grave, spreading the parents' ashes, locating a body mistakenly buried, searching the records and seeking justice.

Each family represents a larger group of who is buried on Hart Island: infants, immigrants, victims of disease and epidemics and victims of crime.Their stories are separated into chapters within the Nineteenth Century poem by Walt Whitman,  "Leaves of Grass."  This poem is set to music composed by Fred Hersch and sung by Kurt Elling. It portrays the beauty and darkness of Hart Island that is unchanged since Whitman's lifetime.

Hart Island is the last undeveloped one hundred acres in New York City, a place abundant nature. Yet, it carries a primal fear of being forgotten. The burial place of three quarters of a million people, it represents a democracic as well as the looming flipside of the American Dream.

A rough cut was completed in 2002. Second cut completed in 2007.

About the Director
Melinda Hunt is an interdisciplinary artist  whose works include video, photography, installation, and public art. She graduated from Reed College in 1981. She received a M.F.A. in Sculpture (1985) from the Yale School of Art and a M.S. in Digital Imaging & Design (2007) from New York University.  She founded the Hart Island Project in 1991.  She published a book Hart Island (1998) in a collaboration with photographer Joel Sternfeld. She has received  awards from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts (1987), New York State Council on the Arts (1995, 2000, 2011) and Canada Council  for the Arts  (2008, 2009).

Additional Information
In 1991, Melinda Hunt began visiting Hart Island with Joel Sternfeld to photograph document the burials and the abandoned prison island. She worked with inmates to obtain testimonials of the process. In 1994, she began to negotiate with the Department of Correction in New York City to travel to Hart Island with relatives of the buried. In 1999 she took two people, Paul and Pat, whose common tie was two relatives buried on Hart Island. The documentary begins with this trip and continues with new interviews on the present website of families who make the journey to Hart Island.

In 2002, Arnie Charnick contacted Melinda about going to Hart Island to spread his mother's ashes. Arnie has chosen to bury his brother,  Ray, a drug addict who died of AIDS in 1997, on Hart Island. He wanted to reunite his family. By the time, permission was granted, Arnie's father had  died.

In 1982 Rose Lorincz was buried as Unknown White Female after her body was discovered floating in the Hudson River. She was disinterred twenty years later and her boyfriend was charged with murder. In 2005 he was convicted of aggravated manslaughter  in accordance with 1982 laws. Due to statute of limitations on old manslaughter laws he could not be sentenced. Phyllis, his sister tells the story of how she help him dump the body in the river and then turned him in after 20 years.

Over the weekend the world was gripped by the drama surrounding the mysterious murder-homicide of the former CEO of Dutch bank ABN Amro and members of his family, and whether there is more foul play than meets the eye. However, that is nothing compared to what just happened in the tiny, and all too quiet Principality of Lichtenstein, where moments ago the CEO of local financial institution Bank Frick & Co. AG, Juergen Frick, was shot dead in the underground garage of the bank located in the city of Balzers.

Based on preliminary reports, the murder is the result of a disgruntled fund manager, Juergen Germann, who had previously been embroiled in a "bitter dispute" with the government and the bank. Bloomberg has more:

A 48-year-old man was shot dead in the underground garage of a financial institution in Balzers at 7:30 a.m. local time, the principality’s police said on its website. The suspect, Juergen Hermann, fled the scene in a Smart car with Liechtenstein number plates, according to police. Neither the victim nor the institution were identified in the statement.

The deceased was Juergen Frick, CEO of Bank Frick & Co. AG, Switzerland’s Radio 1 said in an e-mailed statement, citing employees of the bank. Calls to Bank Frick were answered by a voice-mail message saying the company is closed because of “a death.” It gave no further details.

Hermann is a fund manager who has been embroiled in a dispute with the Liechtenstein government and Bank Frick for many years, Switzerland’s Radio 1 said.

The Liechtenstein government and the country’s Financial Market Authority “illegally destroyed my investment company Hermann Finance and its funds, depriving me of my livelihood,” according to a website registered under the name Juergen Hermann of Hermann Finance AG.

He has filed lawsuits seeking recovery of 200 million Swiss francs ($225 million) from the government and 33 million francs from Bank Frick, according to the website. The lender “illegally enriched itself,” among other alleged crimes, it said.

A representative of Hermann’s lawyer declined to comment when reached by telephone. A call to Hermann Finance’s office was answered by an employee of a law firm who said his company isn’t related to Hermann Finance.

The narrative against the "publicly hostile" alleged shooter has already been flushed out.

Hermann has been “publicly hostile” to the country’s Financial Market Authority and some of its employees, forcing it to take security measures in consultation with the police, FMA spokesman Beat Krieger said in an e-mail today.

The escape vehicle was later found in the village of Ruggell, 25 kilometers (16 miles) north of Balzers, police said.

“The area is being searched by police with dogs and helicopters,” the 120-member police force said. Zurich police are helping to document the crime scene, spokesman Mario Cortesi said.

On Monday morning, it came in Balzers a homicide, the suspect is currently volatile.

Against 07.30 clock in an underground garage of a financial institution is a homicide in which a 48-year-old man was shot occurred. When volatile suspects are Jürgen Hermann from the Moors. He is armed and dangerous, according to police reports, the investigation of the National Police is in full swing.

Notes on a possible whereabouts of the suspects are requested immediately to the police landing +423 / 236 71 11. Upon encountering the suspect, it is important to exercise extreme caution.

A team of researchers in Switzerland have developed a way of levitating and transporting small objects using nothing but sound. Using ultrasonic waves that is, sound waves whose frequencies are too high for humans to hear, scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich have made water droplets, instant coffee crystals, styrofoam flakes, and a toothpick, among other objects, hang in mid air, move along a plane, and interact with each other.

It is the first time that scientists have been able to use sound to simultaneously levitate several objects next to each other and move them around.

As anyone with a subwoofer and a teenager knows, sound waves exert pressure. When those waves are bounced between carefully aligned surfaces, they can create what is known as a standing wave, in which the total pressure from the original wave and its reflection cancel each other out. Objects placed at spots along the wave with the lowest amplitude, known as node points, tend to stay put.

In the past, scientists have been able to acoustically levitate bits of styrofoam and even small insects and fish. But until now, nobody has figured out how to get acoustically levitated objects to do anything other than just hang there, even though moving them has long been known to be theoretically possible.

“Theoretically there’s no difference between theory and practice,” says engineer Daniele Foresti, the study’s lead author, in a phone interview. “But in practice there is.”

My housemate Caleb, and I had a conversation over an ice cold beer back in January during our expedition to the nearby Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

He said, "I had this weird thought a few months ago...someone asked me to do something that I really didn't want to do.  I told them 'I am not that kind of human!' But every since I have been wondering why I said that.. because its kind of an odd thing to say to someone.  Prior to that I had always thought of humans as being the same, 2 arms, 2 legs, a head, male or female, basic same biology with some differences between the two sexes.  But otherwise all the same."   I replied "You mean like we are all wearing our earth-diving suits?"   Caleb said, "Yeah! You could think of it like that!"

So we talked at length of our our similar views that are many different, "souls", or Eternal Essence inbodied here on this planet.  All pretty much look the same on the outside but many different perspectives on things. Maybe some who never had a human form before, or were an ET in another life, a "divine" in another existence not having known the lower energy densities, or perhaps even just an energy being, or even angels who decided they wanted to experience this moment because they knew something very important happens next and they want to be a part of it.

My friend GW Hardin wrote a series of articles on the coming DNA changes in humans.  He also told me that the Angelic realm said "we want to join our kind with your kind"... which is an interesting approach because it indicates the highest realms of existence, do not think humanity is something that is "lower" or debased, or "fallen" as is commonly taught in earth myths. They marvel at how we navigate it all.

The Angelic realm is also unique in that they see it from the beginning of time, and how it is all one. They do not talk down to humans, nor do they say "worship me" or "behold my glory", no that kind of behavior comes from another realm, the realm known as the divines and those realms below that.  You could call it the middle child syndrome, not the bratty kids on earth you can't even wash their faces and brush their teeth without being reminded, but not the adults on the block either.  If you ever have ANY entity tell you there are an angel and speak of their own glory...well you are not talking to angel... for that kind of thinking is separation from the ONENESS of I AM.

Some of these beings in human form spent eons in the flesh.  And they got very good at it.  Some of the newbie ETs find life very hard on this planet, many left early through self-inflicted destruction, they couldn't understand why things are so hard here.  Some just don't get the "human thing".

All these beings in the fleshly forms we call humanity.  Its a paradox of sorts I suppose.  And it really defies the idea of one realm being "lower" or  "higher" for how is it someone from another realm can have that consciousness if it is not all the same thing?  How is it one consciousness can be from Pleiades, Sirius, or Andromeda.  Perhaps navigated the cosmos in an incredible sense of freedom of movement most of us on this planet have never known. Another might be from a realm that has known little darkness yet also little free will, for if there was no choices, there can be no "wrong" choices.   Some choices have pa Or perhaps  even an angelic being in flesh, they do walk among you unawares.

All these sentient consciousness are really the same stuff, that just happened to have a different vehicle - a in-body-ment - or energy structure - to move it around!  Some have been around since time began. Some are quite new. The levels of experience vary, its an ever expanding creation.  The experiences vary as do the roles they have played in duality.  Some have inbodyments on several realms at once, some aware of those other fractals of their being, some are not.

Its all Eternal Essence.  And each has a certain privacy of perception as to the memory of its existence, its origins, likes, dislikes, and temperaments.  Yet all are here, cooperating consciously and unconsciously to bring about what the final results that I AM is performing through all embodiments.

What a marvelous thing that is going on here!

When I first started what most people call, "awakening" I read all the same material on the blogs and web sites concerning the earth changes.   There were prior civilizations on earth, but with Atlantis something went very wrong.   Some of the ET colonies got out before it all collapsed... I mean it never takes a lot of intelligence to read the tea leaves of a dying civilization or nation.  But the pressures of life and routine cause many people to ignore them.  The signs of political and ethical corruption, arrogance and hubris of elites, brutality and oppression are as time worn as the Big Bang itself.  And some, wisely got out before they were trapped here headed back to the Pleiades.

Those they call the Argathans beat a hasty retreat underground and have been living there for at least 13,000 years.  They can be rightly called a break-away civilization, for they chose to leave the surface world for the inner one.  Their energetic became so different than the outer one that they found it painful to even go to the surface world.  Yet one has to wonder how they will answer the question "why did you let us languish on the surface?"  You could pose that question to the ETs too. Its a question that needs answering at First Contact.

The Cabal has their prophecies, they know what time the galactic clock is, and they know their time is through.  Their prophecies say that for the changes to come their families must be wiped out.  You think that might be motivating their resistance to the end?  Even they love their kids. How do you think that dynamic plays out when you hear of calls for destroying ever last one of them?  Kind of a self-perpetuating prophecy against that background dynamic, but nothing is cast in stone.  That scenario doesn't have to happen.  They can survive.  But their actions will ensure that scenario if they don't create something else.  We all can create something else, something better than brutality and more bloodshed on this planet.

One of the Cabal's greatest fears, is being seen for what they really are, lackeys, minions, and brokers for the divines. To admit that is rather humbling for them.  The divines themselves WANT to be seen!  Why they haven't been (and they have that ability) is perhaps because they signed a contractual agreement with their power hungry minions to not be seen during their tenure of management since the days of Babylon.  All contract systems on earth are just contract templates from higher realms.  The Cabal frankly is not that creative....learn a template for one country you learn them all.  But oh are they good at managing beliefs, expecations and limitations!  Experts at that!  Time to repurpose!

We can create something better than RV's and Prosperity plans that are based on banking trading platforms that siphon the energy of the embodiments on this planet.  How many Cabal bankers have to be bought off to change this planet? And if you buy them out, how does that change anything? Promises of future arrests?  You think they are stupid enough to accept a buyout with that hanging over them?  Do you think we are stupid to believe that they will be arrested? Why would anyone wanting change to this planet reinvigorate the very thing that is keeping it enslaved?  Why would any "Global Reset" want non-disclosure agreements and contracts on the inbodyments?  Since when did consciousness rise from external circumstances rather than through the heart of the individual?  Are you willing to be bought off for less than 5% of your value?  You are the VALUE that has been traded on the system, it has always been that way. What Heather and the OPPT did was show what always existed, what IS.  It just been abstracted in various ways by the cabal  to cover where the true wealth is, for if people KNEW they would not tolerate the theft from their being.  Value has been abstracted with dollars, some with Euros, and some with Gold, bank finance paper. What are any of those things without humans?  What kind of human are you?

Nobody is a slave to prophecy. In fact I say fuck prophecy! Are you going to let someone from another time or timeline retroject your BE-ing and DO-ing in this NOW moment?  If the Montauk Project proved anything it proves they left nothing untouched in the timelines of history, and even manipulated the time line of Jesus several times, so you think any other prophecies and soothsaying of the future might just be every bit as adulterated as what happened to the sayings and life of Jesus and other great men of history?    Ever notice how the Apostle Paul's road to Damascus experience reads exactly like an encounter with Grey ET?  Its uncanny is it not?

Everything that is happening is happening in real time and not currently viewable by looking at timelines. You think Source is going to tip its hand on the timelines to those who can traverse or read them?   Its being created on the fly by everyone and our desires for a new outcome.  This time is special.  What kind of human are you? What kind of human do you choose to be?  There are no limits, except those you choose.  Choose wisely.  Choose soon.

Everywhere Angels

You can see what it is you are creating when you look beyond what shows up in your day to day, to who does. You are each other’s angels in a very literal sense.  You show up at critical moments in each others lives to move things forward, fulfill prior arrangements and assist in the manifestation of dreams.  None of these things could happen without the “other”.

These “others” show up for you in many ways.  Today, with the internet as well as hundreds of cable channels, it is possible for your angels to be located anywhere on the planet.  Every word you hear, or scene you watch, has an effect.  No moments are wasted moments. 

Life was not meant to be a solitary journey.  Even the quietest and most isolated have in their day some human contact.  We are a social species for a reason.  That reason is love. 

Love in physical form can be demonstrated by “strangers” as well as those you have come to know intimately.  It is a word or action that on some level alters your day. Sometimes you find your whole mood shifts after catching a clip of a comedian on you tube.  This is not a small thing, it is everything.  Those artists devoting their life to lifting the spirits of others do so for love.

Laughter is an equalizer, a field changer, a stabilizer.  Once the air is cleared with laughter, even for a tiny moment, the possibility for new manifestation occurs.  Creation starts with emotion.  Depression, sadness and being “stuck” sort of stops up the works and brings forth only more of that energy.  This is not expansive or growth producing, but more of a platform from which the good stuff can take off.  Now, we need beginnings and contrast to get us going – but we don’t need to hang out there for very long.

Appreciate each moment of frustration and difficulty for what it is – a point from which you can fly.  How many things, in hindsight only, seem to be the best things and most life changing?   How much easier would life be if we appreciated each moment as it was happening?

Moments have players in them for you alone.  Your life and each act it includes is being performed for only one person in the audience – you.  Each joke has a private meaning, each painful incident specifically placed for you alone.  Life is a subjective occurrence.  Only you understand what the people in yours mean.

That is not to say that some people are not more important to our everyday than others, they are.  Not because of what they do specifically, but how often interaction occurs.  Those we live with have chosen to share more of this lifetime with us than those we get our mail from.  Yet amount of contact does not diminish the potential to effect change.

When you look at everyone you see today as angels, life changing beings who crossed your path just when you needed them to, the world looks different.  You are not surrounded by strangers, but by unknown assistants.  There is no such thing as a solitary life. We are here for each other; that is why we incarnate.

Connections to people on the street or online occur at your command.  A feeling of knowing someone, however brief, is real.  Each contact has value and purpose.  In our busy lives, it becomes perhaps easy to dismiss or ignore each other.

We are surrounded by angels.  They ring up our groceries, walk into buildings with us, deliver our mail and wait behind us in line.  Why not look them in the eyes?

We stare at screens for a good portion of our days and yet while doing so miss another facet of equally vital contact – real people.  That person sitting next to you on the train may have written the really powerful blog you just read or produced that funny you tube clip.  He also may have something to say that you could use right now.

It has become habit to avoid each others eyes as we move through our daily activities.  This is a loss for all parties.  The most mundane tasks take on life and meaning when a connection is made.  Try it.  Create moments wherever you are.  Meet each other in the place where everyone is home – in the eyes.  You may find 9 out of 10 uncomfortable and avoid your gaze but you’ll change everything for that tenth one.  This is why you both showed up just now – to connect.

Love cannot be dismissed as unimportant however brief.  Accept it from wherever it shows up and seek it in every interaction.  It is there.  You may just be the angel who uncovers it for someone else today.  As you allow each moment to present to you its miracle, welcome the angel who participated.  An open heart changes everything.

Everything ends.  This means that each moment and contact is a new beginning.  Embrace them all.  They showed up for you alone.
